Singer Abu Bakar Ellah among independent candidates

KOTA KINABALU: Local singer and actor Abu Bakar Ellah was yesterday named as a candidate under the so-called Barisan Bebas or independent front led by incumbent for the Bingkor state seat Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan.

Abu Bakar, 45, made popular by his song “Orang Kita” (Our People), will be contesting in the Kuamut state constituency deep in the heart of Sabah.

He will be up against Johnny Intang, a Barisan National candidate from Upko in the state constituency of 10,987 voters.

“I have come this far in the entertainment industry and I have the gut feeling that I can help my people achieve greater heights,” said Abu Bakar, whose Penan haircut made him stand out in the crowd.

Asked whether he would be changing his image now that he is in politics, he said that he would remain as he is.

He has so far released five albums and acted in several telemovies. The most popular songs include “Orang Kita” in the Sabah dialect and “Proton Saga Kelabu” which is entirely in Kadazandusun.

“Like in the movie, I am a humble man, a kampung boy who wishes to make a change,” he said when met after the announcement of candidates by Dr Jeffrey in Luyang, near here, yesterday.
